Recently, I led an onboarding program for new leaders within our institution, designed not only to introduce them to their roles but to prepare them to lead in an environment shaped by digital transformation, international collaboration, and evolving compliance requirements.

Leadership in higher education today requires more than academic excellence. It demands strategic digital competence, quality assurance expertise, and the ability to navigate complex regulatory and collaborative environments.

Workshop Focus

This was not a generic leadership course — it was a custom-designed program built on my expertise in:

  • Instructional design & online learning — enabling leaders to champion pedagogical innovation and blended learning strategies.

  • Technology integration — ensuring they can leverage digital tools effectively across teaching, administration, and research.

  • Quality assurance (AQ Austria, AACSB) — embedding accreditation standards and continuous improvement practices into departmental leadership.

  • Legal AI frameworks — understanding the EU AI Act and its implications for educational technology, student data, and program design.

  • International cooperation — preparing leaders to work within our University Alliance network, co-developing joint programs, and aligning policies across borders.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the program, participants were able to:

  • Apply technology-enabled leadership strategies to enhance teaching, research, and student services.

  • Integrate quality assurance frameworks into departmental planning and performance reviews with specific focus on "all things digital".

  • Identify AI-related risks and compliance requirements in academic and administrative settings.

  • Build cross-institutional collaborations with partner universities, leveraging shared resources and expertise.

Next Steps

  • Follow-up coaching for leaders on specific projects (digital transformation, quality audits, AI compliance).

  • Peer learning groups focused on best practices in online learning and cross-border program management.

  • Integration with ongoing leadership development pathways covering micro-credentials, digital credentialing, and data protection.

  • Expansion of the onboarding model to all levels of academic and administrative leadership across the institution.

In an era where universities are both local institutions and global actors, leadership onboarding is the first step in ensuring our leaders are not only capable but future-ready, equipped to drive innovation, maintain compliance, and foster international collaboration.
